Taipei Shines at IMEX America

The Taipei City Government’s Department of Information and Tourism made a dazzling appearance at IMEX America in Las Vegas, one of the world’s leading MICE exhibitions. Under the theme “Undiscovered Taipei,” the Taipei Pavilion captivated global buyers with a creative Happy Hour event, highlighting the city’s diverse venues and commitment to sustainability. Through this international showcase, Taipei successfully promoted its vibrant city brand and reaffirmed its position as a rising MICE hub in Asia. On Wednesday, August 13, around 3:00 a.m., Venus and Jupiter will stage a close conjunction in the eastern sky, separated by just about 1 degree—their closest approach of the year. With Venus shining at magnitude –4.0 and Jupiter at magnitude –1.9, their simultaneous rise before dawn will be a romantic and spectacular scene. Late on Saturday, August 16, the last quarter Moon will pass near the Pleiades star cluster—also known as the "jewel box of the night sky". A pair of binoculars will offer a charming view of the Moon and the cluster's densely packed stars in the same field of view. On Tuesday, August 19, Mercury reaches greatest western elongation, placing it 18.6 degrees away from the Sun. This marks the best time to observe Mercury this season. Just before dawn, you'll be able to spot bright Mercury, and with binoculars, also catch the nearby Praesepe (Beehive Cluster) to its left. Another fascinating highlight this month is Chi Cygni, a red giant star in the heart of the Summer Triangle. This long-period variable star brightens from an extremely dim magnitude 14.2 to a visible 3.3, with a cycle of about 408 days. In August, it reaches peak brightness, making it an ideal opportunity to spot a variable star with the unaided eye. Taipei Broadcasting Station Wins Dual Honors, Showcasing the Strength of Public Radio

Taipei Broadcasting Station (TBS) recently received two prestigious awards, which were formally presented to Deputy Mayor Lee Shu-Chuan at today’s (Aug 19) municipal administrative meeting, highlighting a new milestone for the city’s public radio service. This year, the station was honored with the 50th Gracie Award (2025) from the Alliance for Women in Media (AWM) in the category of “Non-English Program – [Radio, Nationally Syndicated Non-Commercial].” In addition, it earned an Excellence Award in the 5th Journalist Impact Award organized by the Hondao Senior Citizen’s Welfare Foundation, in the category of “Radio and Online Audio — Feature Reporting.” Together, these achievements demonstrate the quality and social impact of Taipei’s public broadcasting service. Deputy Mayor Lee noted that the two winning programs reflect both global and local commitments: one amplifies international women’s voices, while the other shines a light on the lives of visually impaired seniors living alone in Taipei, with both embodying a strong sense of social responsibility and humanistic concern. He further praised the professionalism and dedication of the hosts, whose storytelling brings overlooked corners of the city into focus, inspiring empathy and allowing audiences to experience the warmth, resilience, and inclusivity of Taipei. He encouraged the station to continue innovating and producing impactful, high-quality programming to be enjoyed by all. TBS Director Shao-Chien Hu also remarked that as the city’s key municipal media platform, the station has long prioritized issues affecting vulnerable groups, including older adults, people with disabilities, and children. Through professional reporting and cross-sector collaboration, the station seeks to deliver programming that is not only informative but also infused with empathy — making radio a close and trusted companion in daily life. Host, Mali Liu, who has now twice received the prestigious Gracie Awards from the AWM, has long dedicated her work to highlighting the voices of women composers and related issues. She firmly believes that the true value of media lies not in chasing ratings or clicks, but in upholding the artistic integrity that forms the foundation of quality music programming. Her award-winning program Thousand Miles, Talks About Music began airing this year (2025) on Malaysia’s “CITYPlus FM,” using music as a medium to engage listeners with global issues and further demonstrating TBS’s growing international reach. TBS host Ryan Huang, recipient of the “Journalist Impact Award — Feature Reporting,” explained that his program Glimmer Taipei was founded on the idea of “shedding light on diversity.” Each episode gives voice to communities that are often overlooked, weaving together interviews, documentary storytelling, and gentle narration to not only raise awareness but also foster empathy, strengthen community support systems, and provide insights for building a more age-friendly city. These award-winning programs continue to air on TBS at FM93.1 and AM1134. Listeners can also tune in to enjoy Thousand Miles, Talks About Music and Glimmer Taipei, along with a wide array of other quality programming on the “T Radio” online radio platform (https://tradio.gov.taipei). The Taipei City Department for Youth and the Youth Advisory Committee traveled to Tokyo, Japan, to participate in the "2025 Teens Square Tokyo Project" forum

To expand international exchanges and city diplomacy among Taipei youth, the Taipei City Department for Youth, together with five outstanding youth representatives under the age of 18, was invited to participate in the "2025 Teens Square Tokyo Project" international forum held by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Liaison Office for Child-Oriented Policies from August 20 to 22, 2015. The forum brought together young people from Surabaya, Indonesia; Dublin, Ireland; Brussels, Belgium; Tokyo, and Taipei City to explore the vision and practice of "child-friendly cities" through cross-border dialogue and collaboration (Note: According to Japan's definition of "children", it refers to young people under the age of 18). The Department for Youth pointed out that the participation in this event was due to the previous visits of then-Commissioner Wei Yin to Tokyo and his attendance at relevant forums during these visits. Wherefore, the organizer invited the Department for Youth to recommend five Taipei City youth representatives to participate. During the city exchange session, the Taipei City youth representatives introduced the operating mechanism of the "Taipei City Youth Affairs Advisory Committee", explaining how the platform encourages youth participation in municipal affairs, implements the concept of public participation and urban co-creation, and emphasized that Taipei is committed to empowering youth to speak out, so that young people can actively participate in the future development of the city. The youth representatives said that children and teenagers not only need to be protected, but should also be regarded as participants in urban governance. Only by truly being included in decision-making can Taipei become a city that is both inclusive and resilient. They hope to receive more attention in the future and expressed their gratitude to the Department for Youth, emphasizing that it is a great honor to bring the voices of Taipei's children and teenagers to the international stage. Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike also met with youth representatives from various cities during the event. During the meeting, Taipei youth representatives expressed their willingness to collaborate with other cities to create a shared future, emphasizing that young people should transcend national boundaries to address global challenges jointly. Taipei and Tokyo share the qualities of resilience and innovation, and look forward to deepening their bilateral partnership and jointly fostering a more inclusive, diverse, and sustainable urban vision. Furthermore, the forum organizers invited Mikiko Ōtani, former Chairperson of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child and renowned Japanese human rights lawyer, to provide expert advice on children's human rights, highlighting the forum's emphasis on and diverse perspectives on the topic of "child-friendly cities." The Department for Youth pointed out that Taipei City youth representatives, under the theme of "Building a Youth-Friendly City with Diversity and Resilience," proposed an urban development blueprint centered on "inclusion, sustainability, and innovation." The content covered specific practical cases such as digital technology applications, friendly public space design, and youth public participation mechanisms. During the three-day trip, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government also arranged for them to visit local youth activity centers, conduct cultural exchanges with Japanese students, experience the use of relevant facilities by local youth, and establish deep international friendships through on-site activities. Department for Youth Commissioner Yi-hsi Chou stated that this is the first time since its establishment that the Department for Youth has taken young people on an international exchange program. In the future, they look forward to bringing more Taipei youth to the world, allowing them to serve as a bridge between the city and the world. Through their participation in the Tokyo International Forum, Taipei youth not only broadened their global perspectives but also successfully brought Taiwan's youth policies and innovative practices to the international stage, demonstrating Taipei's strength and vision as a youth-friendly and internationally connected city.

New Embankment Artwork Unveiled at Shezi Riverbank Ramp

New Embankment Artwork Unveiled at Shezi Riverbank Ramp

A New Mural Brightens the Shezi Riverbank Ramp A fresh splash of color has arrived at the Shezi embankment! As part of the ongoing Taipei Embankment Story project, the riverside slope at Shezi has been transformed into a striking geometric mural that captures the spirit of daily life along the Keelung River. The mural’s centerpiece—a radiant orange concentric circle—symbolizes the rising sun, gradually blending into a soft blue sky. Through bold, minimal color blocks, the artwork tells a quiet yet powerful story of how Shezi residents live in harmony with the river. According to the Taipei Hydraulic Engineering Office (Taipei HEO), the Shezi riverbank ramp serves as a key access point to the riverside park. For generations, locals have cultivated a deep connection with the Keelung River. Their way of life is steeped in wisdom drawn from living closely with nature, where the rhythm of the river flows through their everyday routines. This mural is designed to rekindle those memories—inviting the public to reconnect with the gentle moments they’ve shared with the river. According to the River Engineering Section of the Taipei Hydraulic Engineering Office, this mural was designed by Creative Director Max. Inspired by The King Who Would Not Accept the Throne from Zhuangzi, the design centers around the passage: “At sunrise we begin our work; at sunset we rest, free and content beneath heaven and earth.” The artwork reflects the harmonious rhythm of life in Shezi, where humans and nature coexist. The mural uses layered geometric shapes to express the beauty of order in both nature and daily life. It begins with a vivid orange concentric circle symbolizing the sunrise, which gradually expands into a soft blue sky. Sunlight streams through the trees and flows along the river, painting a picture of ease, vitality, and balance along the riverside. The background imagery centers on the natural harmony between earth and sky. A centuries-old banyan tree stands tall beside the tidal waters, together forming a richly diverse ecosystem. Life abounds in every corner of the mural; fish swim gracefully, mudskippers leap energetically, Formosan blue magpies flutter through the air, and elegant egrets stand still at the water’s edge. The mural brings Shezi’s vibrant ecology to life, inviting all who pass by to experience the dynamic spirit of the community. The Taipei HEO continues to advance the Taipei Embankment Story initiative, turning riverside embankments into living canvases. By inviting artists with distinct creative voices, the project blends local landscapes with human stories, transforming the embankments into a collective storybook that connects the memories and emotions of Taipei’s residents. Located along Section 2 of Tonghe West Street (just north of Shezheng Road), this stretch of embankment reads like a hidden poem nestled in the city—waiting for passersby to pause and take it in.

Taipei Metro Launches Space-Optimized Trains to Ease Bannan Line Peak-Hour Crowds

Taipei Metro Launches Space-Optimized Trains to Ease Bannan Line Peak-Hour Crowds

To improve peak-hour transportation efficiency and ease passenger congestion on the Bannan Line, Taipei Metro has adopted multiple strategies similar to its New Year's Eve transport model. These include skip-stop service, increased train frequency in one direction, and the deployment of “space-optimized trains” to accelerate the movement of peak-hour crowds. Taipei Metro appreciates the valuable and constructive feedback from all sectors regarding metro capacity. All relevant operational experience and peak-hour data will be compiled and provided to the competent authorities as reference for policy-making. According to data, between 07:30–08:30 on weekdays, the segment from Far Eastern Hospital Station to Longshan Temple Station sees up to 36,000 passengers entering the system. The most crowded time is between 08:00–08:30, with the most congested segment being between Jiangzicui Station and Longshan Temple Station. To alleviate congestion in this segment, starting August 18, the origin stations for two peak-hour extra trains on the Bannan Line have been adjusted from Far Eastern Hospital Station to Jiangzicui Station. The departure times and stations for the six peak-hour extra trains are as follows: - 07:54 from Banqiao Station - 08:07 from Jiangzicui Station - 08:16 from Jiangzicui Station - 08:20 from Banqiao Station - 08:25 from Far Eastern Hospital Station - 08:34 from Far Eastern Hospital Station Additionally, starting August 20, four “space-optimized trains” have been deployed during the 08:00–08:30 period on weekdays, running through the segment from Far Eastern Hospital Station to Longshan Temple Station to expedite passenger flow at Xinpu and Banqiao Stations. Initial observations on the first day of deployment show promising results. Taipei Metro will continue monitoring the situation and promote train modifications to increase the number of space-optimized trains. These space-optimized trains feature five key improvements: smoother passenger flow, optimized space, multi-functional design, clear guidance, and increased capacity. They provide a friendly environment for passengers with wheelchairs and strollers, encourage movement toward the interior of the train, and enhance signage for clearer boarding paths. After interior optimization, each train can accommodate approximately 72 additional passengers. Once the entire fleet is upgraded, peak-hour capacity can increase by 1,000 passengers per hour. The Bannan Line is the highest-capacity route in the Taipei Metro system. Currently, the shortest interval between trains during peak hours is about 2 minutes and 15 seconds. Due to system hardware and software limitations, such as maintaining safe distances between trains, the number of departures has reached its maximum. Taipei Metro advises passengers to take advantage of extra train schedules, move toward the interior of the train when boarding, and consider departing earlier to avoid peak times. The company will continue to monitor actual passenger flow and dynamically adjust train schedules to ensure a smooth and safe travel experience.

Spectacular Celestial Events in September: Total Lunar Eclipse, Saturn at Opposition, and Star Clusters with the Moon

Spectacular Celestial Events in September: Total Lunar Eclipse, Saturn at Opposition, and Star Clusters with the Moon

September's night sky is packed with highlights! The most anticipated event—a total lunar eclipse—will occur in the early hours of September 8 (Monday), accompanied by Saturn at opposition, Venus near the Beehive Cluster, and the Moon passing close to the Pleiades. Together, these phenomena will make September's summer night skies particularly lively and spectacular. The month's centerpiece, the total lunar eclipse, takes place from 00:27 to 03:56 on September 8, lasting 3 hours and 29 minutes in total. During the hour-long total phase, the Moon will take on an eerie dark-red hue. This is the first fully visible total lunar eclipse since 2018, and the entire event can be enjoyed with the naked eye from any open location with a clear view to the southwest. On September 1 (Monday) around 3 a.m., Venus will rise in the northeast alongside the Beehive Cluster (M44), with the two separated by only about 1 degree. At magnitude –3.9, Venus will shine brilliantly next to the cluster's dozens of faint stars—a perfect pairing to observe through binoculars. On September 13 (Saturday), from midnight until dawn, the last-quarter Moon will pass near the Pleiades (M45), also known as the Seven Sisters and often called the 'celestial jewel of the night sky.' On September 21 (Sunday), Saturn reaches opposition, its closest approach to Earth this year, offering the best opportunity to admire the planet often called the most beautiful in the Solar System. On that night, Saturn's rings will be tilted by only 1.8°, appearing through a telescope almost like a fine thread slicing across Saturn. The rings' tilt remains minimal throughout the year, shrinking to just 0.4° on November 24, when the rings will nearly vanish from view. For more details on these and other September sky events, please visit the Taipei Astronomical Museum website.

Summer Exclusive! Discover 76 Dragonfly Species at Neihu's Jinrui Flood Management Park

Summer Exclusive! Discover 76 Dragonfly Species at Neihu's Jinrui Flood Management Park

Tucked at the base of Neihu's Jinmian Mountain Range, Jinrui Flood Management Park is not only a key site for disaster prevention but also a thriving ecological haven. Since its transformation by the Taipei Hydraulic Engineering Office (Taipei HEO) late last year, the park has become a hidden gem for nature lovers across the city. Highlights include the “JinRui Tshân-enn Multifunctional Classroom” named after the Taiwanese word for dragonfly, which is crafted entirely from locally sourced materials and infused with ecological design principles. Together with a striking entry plaza set against a backdrop of forest and water, Jinrui has evolved from a quiet neighborhood retreat into a rising star on Taipei’s nature tourism map. And it’s more than just a place for walking and scenic views—Jinrui has become a must-visit hotspot for dragonfly enthusiasts throughout Greater Taipei. Both dragonflies and damselflies, commonly seen in Taiwan, belong to the insect order Odonata. There's an easy trick to telling them apart. Dragonflies rest with their wings spread flat like airplane wings, have sturdy bodies, and eyes that sit close together—sometimes even touching. In contrast, damselflies are slenderer and more delicate. When at rest, their wings fold neatly along their back like hands in prayer. Their eyes are set farther apart, and their heads resemble tiny dumbbells. Interestingly, the life cycle of Odonata species is closely tied to aquatic environments. Their young, called naiads, are aquatic and thrive in watery habitats—where there's water, you'll often find dragonflies. Jinrui Flood Management Park benefits from a prime location and has been further enhanced through habitat diversity projects by the Taipei HEO. As a result, the park now features a wide variety of aquatic zones. These range from clear mountain streams winding through valleys, to broad flood detention ponds filled with aquatic plants, and even hidden forest-edge runoffs and moist marshy areas. This rich array of habitats has successfully attracted a wide range of dragonfly species, each favoring a different type of water environment. According to long-term ecological surveys commissioned by the Taipei HEO and observation records from the Neihu Community College Ecology Program, a remarkable 76 species of dragonflies have been identified at Jinrui Flood Management Park. This exciting figure represents nearly half of Taiwan’s 161 known dragonfly species and confirms the park as a major hotspot for Odonata diversity in Taipei. It also highlights the park’s exceptional ecological richness and valu

''India One District One Product Exhibition

''India One District One Product Exhibition" is now open! The India Taipei Association and the Taipei City Department for Youth unveil the mystery of Indian handicrafts

The Department for Youth, Taipei City Government, and the Taipei India Association have collaborated in a joint venture to bring you the "India One District One Product (ODOP) Exhibition", which will be held from now until August third at the Arts Salon on the fifth floor of the Department for Youth building. It is open to the public and admission is free. The "India One District One Product (ODOP) Exhibition" is based on the Indian Prime Minister Modi's "Local Manufacturing and Self-sufficient Economic Concept". It exhibits 70 classic handicrafts from India - marble art, textiles, accessories, etc., introduces relevant geographical and historical knowledge, and invites young Indian tourists to tell the stories behind the relevant handicrafts. We hope that through this event, we can lead Taiwanese youth to understand the beauty of Indian culture through the "one district, one product" craft exhibition plan and promote interaction and communication. Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the India Taipei Association in Taipei, this exhibition combines a series of 30 activities, including yoga, Bollywood dance, totems, food, and movies, bringing an Indian cultural feast that can be experienced with all five senses. The event invited India Yoyo, a former journalist who has lived in India for eight years, to start discussions and dialogues among young people on Indian culture. Director Yi-hsi Chou of the Department for Youth, Taipei City Government, said that in the past she had only seen India through the books written by Indian scholars. Indian cultural concepts and aesthetics are worth learning and appreciating. The Taipei City Government is pleased to co-organize this exhibition with the Indian Taipei Association. As the number of Indians studying and working in Taipei increases, we need an international exchange platform to get to know each other and expand our international perspectives. We hope to expand more possibilities for cooperation through this exhibition and event. Director General Yadav of the India Taipei Association said that they are committed to promoting the exchange and understanding of Indian culture. In order to introduce India's vast territory and cultural diversity, Prime Minister Modi proposed the concept of one district, one product. When you walk on the land of India, you will encounter different landscapes every 12 kilometers, and you will see a different world every time you walk out of a train station. The Director General also said that even he only knows about 5% of India. The India Taipei Association hopes that through this exhibition in cooperation with the Department for Youth, everyone in Taipei will have a better understanding of Indian culture and feel the richness and vitality of India. The "ODOP - Exhibition of Timeless Crafts from India" will be held from July eighteenth to August third at the Arts and Culture Salon on the fifth floor of the Taipei City Government Department for Youth Building. The public is welcome to visit and enjoy the exhibition. For details, please visit the Facebook pages of both the "Department for Youth, Taipei City Government" and the "India Taipei Association".

Taipei’s New Construction Office Earns Further Recognition with Two Projects Winning 2025 FIABCI-Taiwan Real Estate Excellence Awards

Taipei’s New Construction Office Earns Further Recognition with Two Projects Winning 2025 FIABCI-Taiwan Real Estate Excellence Awards

The New Construction Office of the Taipei City Government's Public Works Department has been honored with the 2025 FIABCI-Taiwan Real Estate Excellence Awards for two of its projects: the "Fire Department Dahu Station New Construction Project", which received the award for Best Planning and Design, and the "Nangang Elevated Connectivity Platform Project", which received the award for Best Construction Quality. The awards ceremony was hosted by FIACBI-Taiwan and took place at 4:00 p.m. on July 29, 2025, at the Grand Hyatt Taipei. According to the New Construction Office, the site of the "Fire Department Dahu Station New Construction Project" is located adjacent to Exit 2 of Dahu Park MRT Station in Neihu District, Taipei City. The future building will comprise one basement level and five above-ground floors. The first floor will house the duty room, standby quarters, and garage for emergency vehicles, while floors two through five will include office space for the fire brigade, dormitories, a fitness room, and training platforms—aimed at providing a better working environment for firefighters tasked with demanding duties. The architectural design adopts a composed gray color scheme, complemented by both dark and light green louvers. These elements are integrated with the fire department's symbolic tri-colors—yellow, red, and white—representing the spirit of firefighting and emergency rescue services. Minimal development is planned for the surrounding area of the main building to preserve the existing arboreal landscape. Additional trees will be planted to reinforce hillside greening, contributing to a green building environment. Moreover, the site along Section 5 of Chenggong Road, adjacent to Dahu Park MRT Station, will include setbacks for pedestrian walkways and greenbelt spaces, in line with efforts to create a more community-friendly facility. These developments aim to enhance Taipei City's emergency response system while fostering a user-friendly and accessible public service environment. The New Construction Office explained that in August 2019, the Taipei City Government approved the "Urban Design Control Guidelines for the Taipei City Nangang District Pedestrian Elevated Connectivity System". Centered around Nangang Station, this initiative aims to link three MRT stations through an approximately 3.56-kilometer elevated pedestrian system, establishing Nangang as another administrative district of the city, after the Xinyi Planning District, to feature such a pedestrian elevated connectivity network. The award-winning "Nangang Elevated Connectivity Platform Project and Its Associated Greening Facilities Turnkey Project" constitutes a key component of this initiative. Located at the southwest site of Section 8, Civic Boulevard and Lane 265, Section 7, Zhongxiao East Road, the project establishes a core elevated connectivity platform on the west side of Nangang Station. This platform facilitates the integration of the elevated pedestrian system with ground-level activities. The connectivity platform consists of two parts: a steel arch bridge and a large platform. The main bridge connects northward to the second-floor corridor of the World Pearl residential development and southward to a large park platform. A secondary bridge extends eastward from the side of the main bridge to the Nangang Station BOT building. The bridge structure measures approximately 95 meters in length, 7.5 meters in height, and 4.5 meters in width. The arch bridge's curved form enhances the urban landscape's visual layers and complements the architectural color scheme of Nangang District, harmonizing with the local characteristics. The large platform connects with the surrounding landscape, directing pedestrian flow toward the parks near the Taipei Music Center. Below the platform, a semi-outdoor space adjoins the corner plaza at Section 7, Zhongxiao East Road. Under normal conditions, this area serves as a sheltered playground, market space, or festival venue, and can be adapted to support large-scale events at the Taipei Music Center, thereby fostering a more prosperous commercial district.

Taipei Zoo and Noichi Zoological Park of Kōchi Prefecture Sign Memorandum of Understanding – Taiwan and Japan Zoo Cooperation

Taipei Zoo and Noichi Zoological Park of Kōchi Prefecture Sign Memorandum of Understanding – Taiwan and Japan Zoo Cooperation

On July 24, 2025, Taipei Zoo and Noichi Zoological Park of Kochi Prefecture signed a conservation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This cooperative milestone was witnessed by distinguished guests from the Taipei City Government Department of Education, Kochi Prefecture Department of Public Works, Kochi Prefectural Assembly, Taiwan–Japan Relations Association, and the Japan–Taiwan Exchange Association Taipei Office. This not only marks the tenth agreement between Taipei Zoo and regions of Japan, but also signifies a deepening of cooperation in crucial areas such as animal exchange and the cultivation of conservation talent. Together, these two institutions are opening a new chapter in global wildlife conservation. To achieve meaningful results in global wildlife conservation, modern zoos must go beyond local partnerships and strive to forge integrated conservation exchanges across regions, countries, and institutions. To this end, communication among zoos and partnerships with neighboring institutions play an especially vital role. In recent years, Taipei Zoo has enjoyed strong relations with the Japanese zoo community. It has signed MoUs with a number of prominent institutions across various prefectures and cities, including Tama Zoological Park and Ueno Zoo in Tokyo; Kushiro City Zoo, Sapporo Maruyama Zoo, and Asahiyama Zoo in Hokkaido; Tennoji Zoo in Osaka; Zoorasia in Yokohama; Toyohashi Zoo and Botanical Park in Aichi; and Kyoto City Zoo. On July 24, the zoo further expanded this network as Noichi Zoological Park of Kochi Prefecture became the tenth Japanese institution to sign a conservation MoU with Taipei Zoo. The signing ceremony was led by the directors of both zoos and witnessed by distinguished guests, including Shu-Fei Yang, Senior Specialist from the Taipei City Government Department of Education; Kazuhiko Yokochi, the Director General of the Kochi Prefecture Department of Public Works; Kochi Prefectural Assembly Members Toshihiko Takeishi and Takuma Hatakenaka; Deputy Secretary-General Ching-Hung Lin of the Taiwan–Japan Relations Association; and Dr. Takashi Hattori, Chief Deputy Representative of the Japan–Taiwan Exchange Association Taipei Office. In recent years, Taipei Zoo has actively participated in both domestic and international conservation organizations, strengthening cross-institutional collaboration to support the protection of rare and endangered wildlife. Through data analysis and coordinated efforts across countries and institutions, animal transfers between facilities are carefully managed to revitalize captive populations—balancing sex ratios, optimizing age structures, and promoting genetic exchange. These efforts help prevent genetic bottlenecks in rare and endangered species held under human care. Under the global species conservation and integration plans of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), maintaining strong partnerships with nearby zoos and global species management programs is essential for modern zoos to fulfill their conservation and research missions. Zoos have become the last line of defense for the long-term sustainability of wild populations. The MoU signed between Taipei Zoo and Noichi Zoological Park of Kochi Prefecture was established with a shared vision of supporting sustainable biodiversity. Noichi Zoo's Jungle Museum stands as one of Japan's most prominent tropical rainforest enclosures, offering a valuable opportunity for the two institutions to exchange knowledge on animal husbandry techniques and collaborative population management. The signing of this Memorandum of Understanding is not only a major event in the zoo community, but also an important step for Taipei City in showcasing the achievements of eco-city diplomacy through global wildlife conservation expertise. Noichi Zoological Park of Kōchi Prefecture is also participating in the youth-focused "Taiwan Global Pathfinders Initiative" under Taiwan's Ministry of Education. Through this initiative, Taiwanese youth aged 18 to 30 are invited to intern and engage in exchange programs at Noichi Zoo, promoting the cultivation of conservation talent and fostering youth-to-youth collaboration between Taipei and Japan. This program lays a solid foundation for the next generation to take part in nature conservation work.

Road and Sidewalk Visualized Management Platform by Taipei's New Construction Office Honored with the 21st Golden Map Awards - Application System Award

Road and Sidewalk Visualized Management Platform by Taipei's New Construction Office Honored with the 21st Golden Map Awards - Application System Award

The Taiwan Geographic Information Society held the 21st Golden Map Awards Ceremony on July 9, 2025, at National Central University, recognizing individuals, contributors, or products that have demonstrated excellence and innovation in the field of Geographic Information Systems. The New Construction Office of the Taipei City Government's Public Works Department received the "Application System Award”for its project " Road and Sidewalk Visualized Management Platform." This marks the third accolade for the project, following the "Engineering Digital Innovation Application Award" from the Chinese Institute of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering in 2023 and the "Innovation Award - Excellence" in the Taipei City Government's 2024 Creative Proposal Competition. The New Construction Office also noted that the visualized management platform not only reduces manpower and time costs but also enables smart management by providing real-time monitoring of various deficiencies and improvements related to roads and sidewalks. The platform's "Accessible Pathway Map" is also underway, which will also be made available for public viewing in the future. In addition, the platform introduces evaluation indicators for sidewalks (including accessibility, safety, and comfort). The evaluation scores are displayed using color-coded zones on the platform to assist government agencies in decision-making and to serve as a basis for prioritizing improvement efforts. The New Construction Office concluded by emphasizing that roads and sidewalks are vital components of public infrastructure, and their long-term, effective management and maintenance remain a key objective. Moving forward, the office plans to promote inter-departmental collaboration and resource sharing to further enrich and diversify the platform's data. It will also guide road inspection contractors in integrating imaging equipment to capture street view imagery during routine inspections, ensuring continuous updates to the platform's map data and supporting the goal of data sustainability. Upholding the principles of innovation, technological advancement, and sustainability, the New Construction Office is committed to creating a more comfortable, safe, and friendly road environment in Taipei.

Beyond the Finish Hit the Road with Taipei! 2025 Taipei Marathon Registration Now Open

Beyond the Finish Hit the Road with Taipei! 2025 Taipei Marathon Registration Now Open

The 2025 Taipei Marathon is set to begin at 6:30 a.m. on December 21, starting in front of Taipei City Hall. At today's press conference (July 15), organizers officially announced that registration for the full marathon lottery will open to the public starting at 4:00 p.m. today. Meanwhile, registration for the half marathon lottery will begin at 4:00 p.m. on August 8, following the close of the full marathon registration period. To celebrate the holiday season, a special Christmas-themed “Breakfast Run” will take place the day before the main race. With two distance options—3 km and 9 km—the event invites participants of all ages to enjoy a joyful, family-friendly running experience and soak in the festive spirit of Taipei. This year's theme,“Beyond the Finish 走飆極限”emphasizes that true triumph lies not in crossing the finish line, but in the perseverance behind every step. The slogan's Chinese phrase“tzǒu biāu to the limit”(走飆極限) comes from the Taiwanese tsáu-pio (走標), meaning“to race,” and conveys speed and energy through the character“飆.”The key visual combines modern design with subtle depictions of iconic landmarks along the course. More than a global sporting event, the Taipei Marathon has become a dynamic celebration of Taiwanese culture and a nationwide festival of sports. High Demand Drives Down Draw Rates — 2025 Taipei Marathon Fully Adopts Lottery System Nicknamed the “final exam” for runners, the Taipei Marathon attracts over 28,000 registrants each year. Since being upgraded to a World Athletics (WA) Gold Label Road Race in 2024, demand for entries has surged—prompting organizers to implement a lottery system for the full marathon category. Last year, the full marathon offered 9,000 slots. After deducting 4,560 reserved entries—including guaranteed qualifiers, invited elites, and WA Gold Label-only participants—only 4,440 spots remained for the public. These were contested by 15,056 applicants, resulting in a record-low 30% success rate. The half marathon, which offered 19,000 slots, reached full capacity within one day of opening registration. This year, in preparation for the World Masters Games 2025 Taipei & New Taipei City, 4,000 spots (2,000 each for the full and half marathon) were reserved for finishers of the World Masters Games – Athletics Road Race. Registration for these guaranteed entries opened on June 19, and all eligible participants have now completed the process. With fewer public slots available, the 2025 Taipei Marathon will move to a fully lottery-based registration system: Full Marathon: Lottery registration open from July 15 at 4:00 p.m. to July 28 at 5:00 p.m. Half Marathon: Lottery registration open from August 8 at 4:00 p.m. to August 20 at 5:00 p.m. Limited “Gold Label Marathon Priority Entry” — Act Fast! According to official race statistics, 439 runners finished under 3 hours and 4,135 under 4 hours in 2023. In 2024, those numbers rose to 483 sub-3-hour and 4,214 sub-4-hour finishers. As runner performance improves, more participants now meet the guaranteed-entry standards—further driving down lottery success rates. To attract more international participants and inspire local runners to push their limits, the Taipei Marathon is once again offering 1,000 exclusive “Gold Label Marathon Priority Entry” slots. Runners who register will receive exclusive official merchandise and enjoy guaranteed entry, no lottery required. Spots are limited—don't miss your chance to secure your place! Top Local Runners Eye Higher Rankings — Prize Pool Raised to NT$500,000! Break Your PB This Year With its Gold Label-certified course, the Taipei Marathon offers local runners a strategic advantage on familiar ground. At today's press conference, elite runner Edison Huang shared his 2024 experience, where he broke his personal best with a 2:30:05 finish, ranking 17th overall and 6th among Taiwanese runners. He also claimed 1st place in the 30+ age group at the 2025 World Masters Games, proving that breakthroughs come from pushing beyond limits. To inspire more domestic athletes to do the same, organizers have increased the prize pool to NT$500,000 for the top 10 Taiwanese male and female marathon finishers. The champions will receive NT$100,000 each, while 2nd to 10th place finishers will receive performance-based cash awards ranging from NT$50,000 to NT$5,000—a NT$300,000 boost aimed at driving stronger performances. In addition, the top five Taiwanese marathon finishers will each receive a complimentary round-trip ticket on EVA Air to select destinations in Asia, including Tokyo, Osaka, Korea, Hong Kong, Macau, or mainland China. To celebrate top local performances, the event also features the “Gold Label Top 100 Hall of Fame.” The top 100 Taiwanese male and female finishers will be spotlighted in the official digital program and on a dedicated display board at the race venue—recognizing the nation's finest. “Breaking my PB at last year's Taipei Marathon and being part of the first-ever Gold Label Top 100 is an honor,” said Huang. “This year, I hope to lead my training group to new breakthroughs — and personally, I'm aiming for a higher ranking, a prize, and the chance to take on new challenges overseas.” Fubon Financial & adidas Team Up for Sustainability and Performance Since 2021, Fubon Financial Holdings has championed its “Run For Green™” initiative across Taiwan's four major marathons and designated races. For every 40 kilometers run, Fubon plants a tree—targeting 100,000 trees in five years. So far, the initiative has partnered with 8 counties and cities, planted trees in 14 locations, and seen over 300,000 participants, resulting in more than 100,000 trees planted. To further support local elite athletes, Fubon has also introduced a performance bonus: any Taiwanese male or female runner who breaks the national marathon record will receive a NT$330,000 cash prize. Meanwhile, adidas is helping runners chase new PBs. As the half marathon moves to a lottery system this year, those selected will be more driven than ever to chase personal bests. adidas, the marathon's premier sponsor, continues its tradition of hosting structured training programs—this year focusing on the half marathon distance. The adidas Runners (AR) Training Camp offers a 12-week program, opening August 15, led by Cheng Tzu-Chien, Head Coach of adidas Runners Taipei and a former national long-distance runner. Alongside a team of crew runners and pacers, the program includes at least two weekly sessions: weekday track workouts and weekend long slow distance (LSD) runs along the riverside. With high-quality coaching and a proven training system, adidas invites runners to push beyond their limits. Space is limited—don't miss your chance to level up! Fueling the Finish — Government, Sponsors, and Runners All In The Taipei Marathon is more than just a race — it's a celebration of the city's energy and collective strength. Its continued success is made possible by the steadfast support of both public and private partners. We sincerely thank our sponsors for standing with us and empowering runners to chase their dreams: Fubon Financial Holdings, adidas, Herbalife, CITIZEN, PaMi Noodles, Porsche Centre Taipei (PGUM), Taiwan Mobile, Marathon Expo in Taipei, SHOKZ, Synmosa, EVA Air, Allsports Community, EPISODE - JdV by Hyatt Hotel, Betery, Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical, Bravelog Sport Technology, Vitalon, Hermes, Red Bull, GIGIJING, OATSIDE Oatmilk, K.K.ORCHARD, Viva Nuts, TRIKO FOODS CO., LTD., and Chinese Kinesiology Taping Association. A special thanks to Songshan Ciyou Temple for its generous and ongoing support of this iconic event. With every partner and every step, we continue to “走飆極限 (tzǒu biāo to the limit)”—breaking barriers and reaching higher, together. A Starry Extravaganza: July Night Sky Highlights

A Starry Extravaganza: July Night Sky Highlights

This July, the summer night sky will transform into a spectacular starry carnival. Mercury, Venus, and the Moon will take turns dancing with glittering star clusters, while the grand finale — the Southern Delta Aquariid Meteor Shower — will bring a dazzling and educational celestial feast throughout the month. Taipei Astronomical Museum has handpicked four unmissable skywatching events, inviting everyone to gaze up and savor the poetic beauty of our dynamic universe. Highlight 1: Mercury Meets the Beehive Cluster (Praesepe) On the evening of July 3, Mercury will have a close encounter with the Beehive Cluster (M44) in Cancer, shining low in the western sky. The pair will be just about 1 degree apart, making a dreamy scene through binoculars — Mercury like a bright pearl among a sprinkling of stars. On July 4, Mercury will reach its greatest eastern elongation, marking one of the best viewing opportunities of the year. Highlight 2: Venus Joins Aldebaran and the Hyades Cluster From 2:30 AM on July 12, look eastward to see Venus, the bright star Aldebaran, and the Hyades Cluster gathered within a 3-degree circle. Venus and Aldebaran will shine like twin pearls, while the Hyades appear through binoculars like a delicate sprinkle of diamonds — a breathtaking adornment for the night sky. Highlight 3: Venus and the Crescent Moon with Earthshine At around 3 AM on July 22, Venus and a slender crescent Moon will grace the eastern horizon. Through binoculars, you may also catch a glimpse of Earthshine, the faint glow cast by sunlight reflecting off Earth and softly illuminating the Moon's dark side. This poetic sight is well worth an early rise. Highlight 4: Southern Delta Aquariid Meteor Shower The Southern Delta Aquariid Meteor Shower peaks on July 31, with up to 25 meteors per hour expected to streak across the sky. This marks the opening act of the summer meteor shower season. The radiant point rises at 8:30 PM, and with the Moon setting two hours later, the whole night offers excellent viewing conditions — the darker the sky, the better the show! Find a spot with a wide, unobstructed view and minimal light pollution, and enjoy this spectacular meteor display with the naked eye.
